Best Wild Swimming Spots in the UK: Rivers, Lakes & Tidal Pools Rated by the Community

The UK punches far above its weight for wild swimming. Surrounded by coastline, laced with chalk streams, and home to some of Europe's most dramatic lake districts, there's barely a county without a world-class plunge spot. Here are the community favourites, ranked by water clarity, access, and cold plunge credentials.

Scotland: The Big Cold

Loch Lomond, Luss Bay

Water temperature: 8–14 °C depending on season. Luss Bay on the western shore offers a sandy entry, a gradual drop-off, and stunning mountain backdrops. It's one of the most-logged spots in our community database, with hundreds of condition check-ins. Parking is easy, and the village has a café for post-plunge recovery.

Fairy Pools, Isle of Skye

Crystal-clear glacial meltwater cascades through a series of interconnected blue pools. Cold plunge temps regularly sit at 7–10 °C even in midsummer. The photogenic factor is off the charts, but go early — it gets busy. Community logs flag slippery approach paths; neoprene shoes are strongly recommended.

The Lake District: England's Cold Plunge Capital

Ullswater, Sandwick Bay

One of England's most consistent wild swimming locations, with a sheltered pebbly bay that's free from boat traffic. Summer temps hover around 15–17 °C, dropping to 6–8 °C in winter. The Aira Force waterfall nearby adds a natural cold-shower option for the adventurous.

Rydal Water

Smaller and quieter than Windermere, Rydal Water sits at around 12 °C in late spring. Multiple easy entry points along the southern bank. Community members frequently note excellent water clarity and minimal algae — a key safety marker.

Wales: Rivers Worth the Drive

Sgwd yr Eira Waterfall, Brecon Beacons

You can walk behind this waterfall and plunge into the pool below it. Water temperature: a bracing 9–11 °C year-round. Safety note logged by community members: the riverbed is slippery limestone — enter slowly.

River Glaslyn, Snowdonia

Fed by mountain snowmelt, the Glaslyn runs fast and cold through old copper-mine valleys. Community logs consistently rate water quality highly. Best plunge pools are found near Beddgelert — look for the large flat rocks above the road bridge.

The South West: Sea & River Swimming

Porthcurno Beach, Cornwall

Known for turquoise water more typical of the Mediterranean — except the temperature is very much Atlantic, sitting at 12–16 °C from May to October. The granite cliff bowl makes it naturally sheltered. Tidal pool at the eastern end is perfect for solo cold plunges away from the main beach crowd.

River Dart, Dartmoor

The stretch between Dartmeet and Newbridge is a wild swimmer's playground: deep pools, small rapids, and mossy boulders. Water temps range from 8 °C in winter to 17 °C in August. Community logs flag the occasional flash-flood risk after heavy rain — always check conditions before driving out.

How to Check Conditions Before You Go

Every spot listed here is tracked in real time in our app. Before you set off, you can see the latest water temperature reading, a water quality indicator, and comments left by swimmers who were there in the last 48 hours. No more arriving at a spot to find it closed for algae or running too fast after rainfall.
